Last month, I hit a milestone that feels both surreal and exciting – I celebrated 30 years in telecom recruiting! Yep, three decades of matching the industry’s best talent with opportunity, and I’ve loved every minute of it!
As I reflect on this journey, It got me thinking about some of the philosophies that have guided me through these years. Some have worked like a charm, while others… well, they’re better left for a future blog post (stay tuned for that one).
I still remember being a fresh-faced marketing undergrad when I first heard the phrase “Stick to your Knitting” while studying Peters & Waterman’s In Search of Excellence.
It was the de facto business marketing book of that era. The two key takeaways stuck with me were: First, do what you’re good at – stick to your knitting – and don’t get distracted by shiny objects. Second, if you want to grow your business, listen to your customers and frontline teams, then adapt accordingly.
Over the years, we’ve added a few more Business Principles:
- Use technology to stay ahead of your competition (AI & Machine Learning)
- Hire based on drive and motivation, then teach any missing skills
- Build a team you trust and foster a culture of idea-sharing
- Treat people fairly
- Avoid transactional relationships; focus on where your consultative approach can add value. Understanding the “why” behind decisions makes all the difference.
- Offer value to clients and employees by leveraging deep industry expertise and sharing that knowledge with everyone involved
Our success? It’s down to our clients, candidates, internal teams, methodology, teamwork, agility and our niche. And let’s not forget – we have a blast doing what we do!
