10 Critical Wireline Safety Tips

Wireline workers are in jobs that come with certain hazards. Since that’s the case, going the extra mile to remain safe – and to keep others safe – is essential. With that in mind, here are ten critical wireline safety tips.

1. Start with a Plan

Since wireline work can be dangerous, you shouldn’t start without a solid plan in place. With planning, you can develop a strategy to ensure that safety remains part of the equation, all while allowing you to achieve productivity goals.

2. Inspect the Wireline and Other Components

Before operating any equipment, take a moment to inspect the wireline and any other components involved in the task. If anything seems worse for wear, don’t move forward until the issue is addressed.

3. Use All Required PPE

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required on job sites for a reason. Make sure you’re always donning all mandatory PPE, giving you protection against many known hazards.

4. Watch Your Speed

When you’re operating a wireline, maintaining a reasonable speed is essential for safety. Resist the urge to rush and, instead, proceed at a metered pace that’s appropriate for the conditions.

5. Practice Situational Awareness

Even if everyone was in a safe position initially, conditions on a job site often change. Don’t develop tunnel vision as you work. Instead, stay aware of your surroundings, ensuring you can adapt if the need arises.

6. Use All Built-in Safety Measures

If there are any built-in safety measures available, such as locks or guards, use them even if they take a little extra time or aren’t the most convenient. Like PPE, they’re there for your protection, so don’t bypass them at any time.

7. Focus During Training

Formal training helps you learn how to operate new equipment, adapt to updated processes, and stay safe on the job. Even if the experience is a bit dull or tedious, remain focused. That ensures you get all of the critical information, making it easier to stay safe.

8. Keep an Eye on the Weather

With wirelines, the weather can take a situation from safe to risky to outright dangerous surprisingly quickly. Make sure to stay on top of the weather at all times. Along with visually assessing the area, check reports regularly and sign up for inclement weather alerts to stay informed.

9. Practice Good Communication

Communication is a must if you want to stay safe on the job. Don’t take any potentially hazardous actions unless those around you are aware and, if it’s a joint effort, all of those involved are ready to do their part.

10. If You See Unsafe Activity, Say Something

Keeping a job site safe involves more than taking the right course; it also requires everyone to speak up if they notice something unsafe. Whether it’s damaged equipment, hazardous conditions, or an employee’s actions, contact a supervisor if there are issues. In the end, safety should be a priority, not just for your sake but for everyone present.
